Professor David
Sarikaya’s journey is one of perseverance, dedication, and self-discovery.
Growing up in a small town in south west of Turkey, David was always fascinated
by the workings of the human mind. He spent countless hours reading books on
psychology, trying to understand the complexities of the human psyche. His
passion for the subject only grew stronger as he got older, and he knew that he
wanted to dedicate his life to studying and researching it.
David’s academic journey began at Monash University, where he
earned his Bachelor’s degree with a major in Sociology and Politics in 1986.
Following this, he pursued an accredited undergraduate psychology major at Swinburne University and undertook postgraduate training in counseling
psychology at RMIT University. In February 2000, he was awarded a Ph.D for
his groundbreaking research on the intrapersonal impact of interpersonal
dynamics, conducted under the supervision of Dr. John Cone, a Consultant
Psychiatrist. In 2002, the manuscript of his thesis was transposed into his
first book, Crossroads: Your Journey Within and published by Melbourne Books.
Throughout his career, David has engaged in extensive documented
professional supervision with experts such as Dr. Jim Penney, a Consultant
Psychologist, and Dr. John Cone, a Consultant Psychiatrist. His early research focused on chronic
schizophrenia at Mont Park Psychiatric Hospital and the Victorian Transcultural
Psychiatry Unit, laying the foundation for his later work in schizophrenia,
depression, anxiety, PTSD, vicarious traumatization, pathological addictions,
sexual disorders, and the theory and practice of psychotherapy.
David is the pioneer of Self Empowerment Theory and its clinical application, Self Empowerment Therapy, an innovative and groundbreaking approach derived from his
extensive research into the self. This therapeutic method which has been extensively researched with sufferers of depression and anxiety associated with PTSD and Acute Grief, reflects his
commitment to empowering individuals and fostering positive change. David’s
work has helped thousands of individuals, couples and families overcome their struggles and lead happier,
more fulfilling lives.
David
continues to be actively involved in clinical work and supervision and academia via OnlineTherapyClinic, a Global Mental Health Outreach Program and designing professional development and
training programs, covering areas such as anger and vicarious trauma
management, leadership, and integrity management. He is dedicated to advancing
the field of psychology through ongoing research programs, including
investigating the efficacy of Self Empowerment Therapy in combination with
other therapeutic modalities for the treatment of PTSD among combat veterans.
As an esteemed psychologist, professor, and
author, David Sarikaya's contributions have left a lasting impact on the field
of counselling psychology, and his commitment to empowering individuals remains at the
forefront of his work.
David’s journey is a testament to the power of hard work,
dedication, and self-belief. He has shown that with the right mindset and a
willingness to learn, anyone can achieve their dreams. His story is an
inspiration to all those who aspire to make a difference in the world and leave
a lasting impact on the lives of others.
David has held several
Ministerial Appointments in Victoria and NSW, undertaken voluntary civic duty for over two decades and is the Director of several clinic brands and an
